it's (not) okay to (not) hate AI
scrolling on bubbles, a post stood out to me as someone tried to point out that it was, supposedly, okay to not hate ai - that if one was curious about it, experimented with it, and it helped their workflow, they should just hop on it and not follow the hating "bandwagon"
first off - to each their own. you're allowed to find it a "cool tool"- though as a "tool" it is more a "nuclear bomb" than a "hammer" - or to admire just how far computing has come. it is okay to be curious, ofc, even more so because it is in our nature.
i will also not touch that which i have sadly found to be subjective: privacy concerns, authors rights, intellectual property, data collection, processing and brokering by silicon valley companies, among other almost endless problems, to which my reaction ranges from: "i can't believe you're doing this to yourself"" to "you really don't fucking care about other people, right?"
even if you don't give a flying shit about all that, it is still an objectively trashy technology (or tool, if you so will) to use if you care if and at all about the planet we live in, the people on it, and everything else.
it ripped apart the market for pc parts, it caused mass lay-offs, it's created a huge stock market bubble that is soon to crash on inadvertent people's heads (which will again only impact those who cannot afford to lose), it uses so much water it's destroying entire communities and environments, cities around the huge data centers built just to run them are being completely ravaged by heat waves and heat islands...
that is to say: if you use ai frequently as a tool, then i'm sorry, but there's no purity test you would pass. every question you ask a llm actively hurts both other people and the environment (unless you run a locally hosted model, which, don't lie, you do not). every funny image, work file, or code you run through ai does objectively make our planet worse, our future even bleaker.
you all should hope hell is not real, but even then, it is probably colder than what earth will be in a few years.
[DISCLAIMER] ai is sadly a tool that has and will continue to be used in mostly every single corporate job, and sometimes not using it will cause you to be left behind (or worse). this is not a jab at people who use it only because they have to. life is fucking hard as is and i will not incentivize you to fuck up your living for a moral or even political (and using - or not using - ai is as political as it gets) standing - but we should stand up, even with bloodied hands. walk encroached, but protest, for sometimes it is all we have.
